What does a therapy session look like?

In our initial session we will work together to explore the reasons you are seeking therapeutic support and develop an understanding of your therapy goals. It is important we gain a comprehensive assessment of your needs which will incorporate assessment of risk and how we can manage this together if necessary. Every individual is unique which is why we take this time to create a tailored plan and explore in detail the problems you are encountering; we will build upon this understanding and review the plan as we progress. Within the first two or three sessions we will take some time to foster ideas of how your current problems are being maintained and understand how past experiences may have influenced your present situation. To do this we investigate the relationship between your thoughts, beliefs, emotions, somatic responses and behaviours. Everything we discuss and document will be shared with you to use in reflection, and to help make sense of the considered concerns. We will regularly review your thoughts on the therapy style and whether you feel this is right for you. Although it is often helpful to take historical experiences into account, we do not necessarily need to focus on these if you would only prefer to work on the current problem. If you are happy to continue, we will discuss forward moving options, mapping out what therapy will look like as we begin to move from the assessment to treatment phase.

How Many Sessions should I have?

Treatment looks different for everybody, and the number of sessions you need will be determined by how you feel. Some people may only require 4 - 6 sessions whereas others may require anywhere up to 20 and more if needed using extended reviews and check-ins for example. As CBT takes a structured approach supported by NICE guidelines, standardised outcome measures are regularly used to gauge your mood and help target the areas we need to address, we will review your progress regularly and ensure you feel supported every step of the way. One thing I would like to stress is that research tells us regular sessions is key to productive outcomes, therefore, if you are approaching a gap of more than 4 weeks between sessions it is advisable to reflect on your commitment ability. As a therapist I understand that life circumstances change and can temporarily redirect the dedication of our time and energy. If this occurs, it is always useful to discuss your intentions, and we can plan for your future needs which may include accounting for a therapy break with a view to returning at a time that is more suitable for you. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via the contact form provided.

Are you regulated and who by?

Yes! I am regulated by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and Social Work England (SWE). I am reaccredited yearly and to achieve this must meet specific standards set by both organisations. This includes accessing regular supervision from another accredited therapist and attaining regular training to stay abreast of latest research and therapeutic approaches. I adhere at all times to the values and ethics set out by both organisations to maintain professional standards and high-quality deliverance of therapy.

What happens if I am not satisfied with the service?

Your satisfaction with the service I provide is of upmost importance and it means a lot to me that you find your experience both highly beneficial and supportive. If you are ever dissatisfied with the service, you can talk with me/your therapist about how you are feeling in the first instance to reach a resolve. I/the therapist will regularly check in and initiate open dialogue surrounding the sessions to ensure you are satisfied, and I/they are trained to explore best ways to resolve an issue or problem. I would like to reassure you that in the unlikely event that you are unable to find a resolve, there is further information provided on specific processes to follow within your therapy contract and shared prior to your first session.

How do I get the most out of my sessions?

Coming prepared to your session will always be beneficial, this will include having an idea of what you would like to work on. Sometimes we just know that we feel unwell and the goal is to feel better, so even if we are bringing an understanding of our feelings at the beginning this is useful. Bringing a book or jotting down notes is good for remembering what was discussed in session, and I will also always share with you work completed together. Making sure that you keep abreast of what we have discussed and setting time aside to read information shared will help you to gain a good foundation and understanding of what we are working towards. Having open discussions around how you are feeling and exploring this in session can also help you to get the most out of your time. There is never a wrong question, only an open outlook and often exploring things that feel most uncomfortable is when we make the biggest breakthroughs!

Are there out of session tasks to complete?

Yes, there are between session tasks that we agree together to help support your new learning and promote change. This approach has been shown to yield desired results because we are combining new ways of thinking with action. The tasks will always reflect the area we are working on and help you to develop a new way of being that supports the outcomes you want to achieve. Sometimes, if tasks feel too difficult to complete alone, we can agree a shared experience where I complete the action beforehand as a form of ‘modelling’ or we can complete them together. There are lots of ways we can work jointly to get you to where you want to be, and I am all in to help!
